What a great start to the year. This February sees the launch of my artist in residence at Kota Restaurant in Porthleven.
Moving to a harbour village has developed my relationship with the sea and what comes out of it to feed us. At the end of 2021 I took part in Porthleven’s first Community Arts Festival and hung my giant Porthleven Crab in the old Netloft. The festival featured an array of events and it was fabulous to be able to see the giant crab in such an apt setting. I invited local Chef Jude Kereama of Kota restaurant to meet the crab and from here the residency began.
Art and Food Collaboration
My recent work has been about the food chain and exploring the ecosystems of agriculture and of the sea. Chef Jude believes in sourcing and foraging locally for food so what better way to celebrate the wonderful local resources we have in Cornwall than by drawing, eating, and talking about food?
The residency starts with fish, a key ingredient in Kota’s menu:
A Journal Of What’s In Season
The aim of the residency is to explore and record what is seasonal, take a closer look at the raw material before it arrives in the restaurant and highlight the need for sustainability. Chef Jude adds:
‘The fishing industry has always been a vital part of Porthleven’s history. Not only does our partnership bring fish and seafood to the walls and plates of Kota it helps tell a story which I hope will be a talking point for our customers’.
The Artwork
Giant paintings of crab and mackerel are amongst a series of original artwork available to see at Kota. The paintings will change over the year to tell a visual story of what’s in season. All artwork is available to buy, plus limited edition prints bespoke to Kota.
